　　Nowadays there are still many people who take " silence is gold " as a doctrine . They believe silence shows one;s intelligence and inner beauty . and can reduce the possibility of being involved in troubles . However , indeed , in many cases , silence is not gold , especially in modrn society . The following reasons can support the argumen .
　　Undoubtedly , when our lawful rights and interests ard invaded , we should not keep silence . At this time , what we should do is to open our mouth to protect ourselves . Moreover , under the increasingly fierce social  competition , everyone must learn to show himself . If you always wait in silence , the chances will not come to you automatically . In addition , in face of the immoral and illegal behaviors , your silence is timidity and selfishness .
　　All mentioned above tell us that silence is not always gold . Instead , sometimes silence not only can not help us but brings a negative effect . Therefore , we should decide when and whether to keep silence according to the special circumstances .
